Completed MAN Thesis: Hope and Spiritual Wellbeing of Filipino Caregivers of Terminally-Ill Cancer Patients

Ms. Zenaida Concepcion, UP Open University

This study determined the relationship of hope and spiritual wellbeing of fifty (50) caregivers to various patient and caregiver characteristics. It also explored the caregivers’ experience of hope and spiritual wellbeing during the care of their terminally-ill cancer patients. The caregivers’ mean scores of hope and spiritual wellbeing were high (both 3.24 out of 4). Patient’ age was significantly correlated with caregiver’s hope (r = 0.30, p = 0.03), while caregiver’s self-efficacy was significantly correlated with caregiver’s spiritual wellbeing (r=0.46, p < 0.01). Caregiver’s educational attainment was significantly associated with both hope and spiritual wellbeing (p < 0.01). Most of the caregivers still hoped that their patients will get well and recover from their illness (78%). If in case these hopes did not happen, the caregivers believe that it was the will of God (28%). As they care for their terminally-ill cancer patients, they put faith in a Higher Being (30%) and pray and sing songs of praise (28%).

Proposed PhD (Nsg) Dissertation: Development of the Nurse Practitioner Role in the Prevention and Control of Hypertension in the Philippines

(Author masked prior to successful dissertation proposal)

This study will be the first in the Philippines to provide empirical data on the health outcomes of specially-trained nurses as they collaboratively manage patients with hypertension. This study aims to develop the role of advanced practice nursing in the country for the prevention and control of hypertension. This study will involve two phases: (1) a 4-day training program for Master’s-prepared nurses, and (2) a quasi-experimental study to compare outcomes of a nurse-led hypertension clinic and a usual care group.
